Foreign languages

The foreign language classes aim to, on the one hand, familiarise the children with each language and acquire it and, on the other, come into contact and discover other nations, civilisations and cultures.

English
English is taught in small groups throughout primary school. In the younger grades, the emphasis is put on maximum exposure to the spoken word. In this manner, the children become familiar with the language’s sounds, while later on they are able to associate this knowledge with the symbols-letters and words to which they can give a meaning. In the more advanced grades, lessons are carried out in multiple communication contexts, while a series of actions is also held and a range of educational approaches is used. The children are thus able to not only reproduce grammatical rules, but also use the language structures correctly to convey their ideas.

French / German
The French and German courses on offer aim to teach the respective languages through communication methods that allow the children to learn about the structure and function of language under different social conditions and in a variety of communication circumstances. Particular importance is given to conveying comprehension techniques for reading, listening and simple grammar phenomena that can be applied when learning any foreign language as, also, one’s mother tongue.

The children choose a second foreign language when they are in fifth grade.
