Visual arts - Music - Drama

In primary school, the arts are indisputably an open field that can tie in directly with most of the curriculum’s cognitive subjects, as well as with the school’s social life.

Visual arts
During art classes, the children give form to their ideas and feelings through sketching, drawing, photography and constructions. The classes resemble a workshop where, divided into small groups, the pupils familiarise themselves with forms of artistic expression. In parallel, they nurture and encourage expression, communication and the exchange of ideas.

Music
During the first two years of primary school, the children discover the world of music through play and movement. In the third grade, the pupils start learning how to play the recorder, come into contact with notes on a musical stave, and learn to read and write music. Always organised around small groups, the lesson not only conveys musical knowledge, but also serves to cultivate personal expression and collaboration. Gradually, functioning as a mini orchestra, the children learn to improvise and create their own compositions.

Drama
By approaching the cognitive subject from a group perspective, the drama classes seek to involve the children through lived experience to explore situations and conflicts, and to handle concepts and ideas, by searching beneath and behind “appearances”. The reason to do so may be a module from the school curriculum, a fairy tale, a poem, a film, a photograph, a slogan written on a wall, a half-finished letter, as the trigger is chosen and prepared n a way that cultivates and promotes creative imagination. Thus, using educational drama and theatre techniques, playing roles or improvising, the children learn to recognise and understand different facets of reality.
